The Department of Transportation (DOT) has said bringing Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology to all vehicles could dramatically reduce the occurrence and severity of car accidents. The organization has been actively advancing V2V technology and is looking to make it a standard safety feature in future automobiles. If the proposed mandate is approved, all new vehicles manufactured after 2020 will require a V2V system. This shift toward advancing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) provides opportunities for businesses not just in the automobile industry.

Safety is of primary concern for all who share the road, and communication between cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks, bicyclists, pedestrians, and the surrounding infrastructure will be key. Creating a completely connected transportation system encompassing V2V, smart bicycles, mobile devices, wearables, and smart traffic signals affords proprietors many investment avenues in the transit safety sector.

This form of intelligent transportation technology works similarly to Wi-Fi in that it is designed so nodes (vehicles, smart traffic infrastructure and smart devices) within a certain radius of each other can "communicate" by automatically exchanging dedicated short-range signals containing data. The system processes information such as direction, speed and location within tenths of a second and warns individuals of impending dangers in real-time.

To properly develop technology intended to save lives, programmers are needed who have an expertise in intelligent transportation technologies, Internet-of-Things (IoT), mobile applications and wearable devices, as well as the software and coding languages that propel them. Understanding how contemporary technologies are designed and function is imperative to properly make an interoperable system that syncs with different devices and proprietary platforms. Having a backend software development partner who has the skill to enable the bilateral communication between disparate ITS technologies will ultimately put proprietors at an advantage in what is predicted to become a booming market.
